Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCPA) has launched its annual public safety campaign, aiming to emphasise the hidden dangers posed by cliff failures along the coastline.

“Cliff collapses are unpredictable and sudden, caused by natural forces like erosion, wind, and waves that continuously reshape the coastline, making even the most serene spots potentially hazardous,” a GORCPA spokesperson said.”

Parks Victoria and GORCPA undertake regular geotechnical assessment of the cliffs.

These assessments improve the understanding of coastal dynamics and hazards, enabling informed management decisions to protect public safety.

The public should be aware of some key safety tips when enjoying the coastal scenery this month.

Make sure to stay away from cliffs and caves, as they are prone to collapsing suddenly.

Stick to established tracks and always follow warning signs.

Most of all, share the word about the dangers of cliff collapses. Taking safety on the coast seriously is a shared responsibility.
