Conheady was recently part of the Australian men’s under 20 netball team that went through unbeaten in the Men’s Netball Nations Series in Singapore.

“It was really good to win the way we did over there,” Conheady said.

“We were reasonably confident going in and were able to win every game by a decent margin.”

During the tournament, the Australians had wins over Singapore (98-27), New Zealand (80-32), England A (72-28) and the United Arab Emirates (107-18).

The grand final saw Australia score a 68-24 win over England A.

Conheady said the team had plenty of intense court training sessions to nail down their style of play.

“Because we were coming from all over Australia, we had to do our own work in the lead up.

“It was good to train together and get to know each other better.”

The Singapore heat was another factor the team had to take into account.

“It was very hot and humid.

“We had a team dietitian who made us really watch our hydration, it was a big thing for us not to be outside in it for too long at any stage.”

As a bottom age player (Conheady has two more years at under 20 level), Conheady was happy with his output, variously playing as a centre, wing attack or wing defence.

“I was pretty happy with it all, I felt I played well when I was on court.

“I only started on court in one of the game but was happy with my contribution when I got on in every game.”

Representing his country was a huge thrill for the 18 year old.

“It’s pretty cool to put on an Aussie shirt and stand for the national anthem.

“It was a fantastic experience.”

Conheady was joined on the trip by mother Cheryle and younger brother Dermot.

“Singapore was pretty small but there’s lots to see and do for tourists.

“Mum and Derm got to get out and see a bit more of it than I did.”

Next up for Conheady is training for the Victorian team for the nationals in Perth in April, and a season of football for the Camperdown Magpies.

“I’ve got Victorian training three times a week in Melbourne.

“I’ll miss the first week of footy due to the nationals but then it will be full on with footy.”
