ONE Camperdown resident got a wonderful birthday present for her milestone birthday when she saw her AFL team take out the premiership flag, making her birthday extra special.

Elsie McKenzie turned 100 over the Grand Final long weekend and was able to see her beloved Collingwood defeat Brisbane Lions.

Ms McKenzie said it made her birthday “much better”.

“It’s fantastic,” she said.

“It made my day for them to win.”

Ms McKenzie spent her birthday with family and friends, having a meal at Lakes Edge Café at Lake Purrumbete.

While turning 100 is a significant milestone, Ms McKenzie said her birthday did not feel any different to other days.

“I just realised I’ve got another number on my age,” she said.

“Just lived a good life. Very quiet, hard work, things like that.”

As part of her birthday celebrations, Ms McKenzie received a variety of bouquets from family members across Australia including Brisbane, Melbourne, Terang, Warrnambool and Geelong.

“Sunnyside shop sent me a bouquet because I worked for Sunnyside for 30 odd years as a volunteer, and then Sunnyside House sent a card and five scratchies in it,” she said.

Amongst all the flowers, Ms McKenzie received many cards from friends and family, including letters and telegrams from important people.

Ms McKenzie received birthday wishes from the King and Queen, Australia’s Prime Minister, the former and current premiers of Victoria, and the governors of the Commonwealth and Victoria.

She said it was “quite exciting”.

“It’s something I’ll never get again,” she said.

“It’s very interesting to have things like that, because you don’t do it everyday and not a lot of people turn 100 at the same time.

“The cards, there must be 100 of them. It’s very nice.”
