“IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere.”
A GROUP of Corangamite residents and Corangamite Shire Council staff gathered under the Camperdown elms to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD).
The networking and storytelling event was held near the Camperdown War Memorial, which features a heroic female figure: the “Spirit of Empire calling upon it’s sons”.
Mayor Kate Makin said International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
“It also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality,” she said.
“It aims to promote a gender equal world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination; a world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive and where difference is valued and celebrated.
“Together we can forge women's equality.
“IWD belongs to everyone, everywhere. Inclusion means all IWD action is valid.”
Those in attendance were given a biscuit emblazoned with ‘IWD’ to mark the occasion.
The first IWD, held in 1911, was supported by over a million people in in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
