Joyce Whitehead celebrates 100 years

STAGE three restrictions did not stop Sunnyside House resident Joyce Whitehead from celebrating a major milestone yesterday.
She turned 100 on Thursday and commemorated the day with afternoon tea and cake with residents in the facility’s lounge room.
Mrs Whitehead also received flowers from the staff and enjoyed an ‘over the fence’ visit from daughter Pam Anderson, who wished her a happy birthday from the adjacent park despite the wet weather.
She was the fourth child of George and Ethel Trigger of Broadwater near McArthur.
Mrs Whitehead completed her schooling at the local school in Broadwater, often making the daily trek for class through the paddocks or on horseback.
After leaving school, she found work at Alanvale station, where she was responsible for domestic services including childcare and cooking.
It was at the station she met her future husband Clive Whitehead, although the pair never lived too far away from each other.
Before the Whiteheads were married, Clive enlisted for World War II and served as a soldier for seven years, mainly at Duntroon.
It was on a short break from duty that the pair married at Port Fairy on February 14, 1942 before they had a short one night honeymoon at Hamilton.
