Junior Bulls shine

POMBORNEIT’S under 17 boys continued their unbeaten start to the season with a four wicket win over Irrewarra Red at Pomborneit on Tuesday night.

The visitors got off to a fast start, reaching 39 in the sixth over before Levi Cootesmith took the first wicket.

Redbacks opener Xavier Cooknell, who plays premier thirds for Greenvale on a Saturday, hit the ball well in his 30 from 23 balls before being beaten in flight by off-spinner fletcher Tolland and smartly stumped by George Sadler.

Regular wickets continued to fall as Pomborneit restricted Irrewarra to 7/94 from their 30 overs.

Tolland led the Bulls bowlers with 2/11 from five overs, with Max Rees, Levi Cootesmith, Jonty Raven, Finn Huggins and Dermot Conheady taking a wicket each.

Pomborneit had to work hard in the run chase, passing Irrewarra’s score six wickets down, finishing at 6/110 from their 30 overs.

Captain Levi Cootesmith top scored with 23 retired from 30 balls, with Josh Reynolds making 21 retired from 30 balls.

Opener George Sadler batted with discipline to make 12 retired from 30 balls, Harvey Roberts made 10 retired from 30 while Miller Murphy hit the winning runs, making 15 not out from 14 balls.

In the under 17 girls, Pomborneit had their first win of the season with a 58 run win over Apollo Bay at Pomborneit on Friday night.

The visitors batted first, making 4/67 from 20 overs.

Isabelle Pilley, Charlotte Henderson and Isla Spokes took a wicket each.

After being 2/20, a 79 run third wicket partnership between Isabelle Pilley and Lilli Saarikallio led Pomborneit to victory.

Opener Pilley made 28 from 55 balls, with Saarikallio retiring on 31 from 55 balls.

Pomborneit finished at 4/125 to record a strong win.

In the under 16 boys on Sunday, the junior Bulls batted first and made 6/206 from their 35 overs against Heytesbury-Princetown at Timboon.

After making two scores in the 40s this season, Max Rees broke through for his first half century at under 16 level, retiring on 50 from 77 balls.

Jonty Raven was elevated to open and made 37 from 41 balls, while Dermot Conheady made a career best 36 from 38 balls batting at number six.

A dominant bowling performance saw the Bulls bowl the Storm out for 30 in 15.5 overs.

Marc Van Es with 3/5 from three overs and Hugo Saarikallio with 2/3 from two overs led the bowling for the Bulls.

In the under 14 boys’ game, Pomborneit lost at Apollo Bay on Friday night.

Batting first, the Bulls made 7/98 from their 30 overs.

Bailey Fox top scored with 19 from 18 balls, with captain Noah Boyd retiring on 13 from 24 balls.

In reply, Apollo Bay made 6/117 from their 30 overs.

There was a competition week off for the under 13 girls, while in the under 13 boys Pomborneit lost to Camperdown on Monday night.

Batting first, the under 13 Bulls made 6/94 from 24 overs.

Top scorers were Bailey Fox with 23 retired and Crawford Dunn with 14.

Camperdown replied with 2/102, with Jamie Gardiner and Angus Murphy taking a wicket each.

In this week’s junior games, on Tuesday Pomborneit host City United at Pomborneit in the under 17 boys competition, the under 17 girls play Irrewarra Red at the Colac’s Central Reserve Hockey Oval on Friday, the under 16 boys play Cobden at Cobden on Sunday, the under 14 Bulls host City United Gold at Pomborneit on Friday night, the under 13 girls play Tomahawk Creek at Pomborneit on Sunday while the under 13 boys have the bye.
