The seven hole modified format will be held over the next two Sundays and is open to all kids aged under 18.
Modified rules include players’ shots being counted only to the green and not into the hole, while balls hit into the rough are replaced back onto the fairway without penalty.
Red tee markers are used, with players able to reach the green in regulation then putting for a ‘real par’ in front of the group.
Co-ordinator Daniel Beard said the kids love the modified format, as the “rules allow all players to play” and gives them the chance to learn golf’s fundamentals out on the course.
He said 11 kids, ranging from pre-school to year 7 in age attended the trial, with the club receiving further interest for the upcoming days.
Beard said the club was running the competitions as another way to introduce players to the game, but also as a means to get the younger generation active.
“We’ve had response from people already from Port Campbell, Timboon and Camperdown,” he said.
“There are kids crying out to try golf and with golf numbers down, we’re playing six to seven holes but we’re also getting the kids out and about and active.”
The club is running the competition days with the help of funding left by the late Frank Hodson, who wanted it to be spent on junior development.
Beard said the club was utilising the money to attract junior players to try golf, with each player receiving a new ball every time they take part.
The money also covers green fees and can of soft drink and chips after play, making golf free and accessible for those juniors wanting to play.
Beard said based on interest and participation, further days may be held by the club across the first term of school.
Tee-off times are 9.30am at Cobden Golf Club, with any interested junior players encouraged to attend. Clubs will be available for use on the day for those without equipment.
