Hard working and reliable: Orange kelpies, have begun popping up across the region in support of independent candidate Alex Dyson at this year’s federal election.

The hard-working and loyal canine is the mascot for Alex Dyson’s community independent campaign for Wannon at this year’s Federal Election.

The Australian kelpie was bred to muster sheep in the rugged areas along the Glenelg River, near Casterton.

Alex said kelpies are “famously hard-working, reliable and have lots of tenacity – they are unique to the south west and a local icon”.

“The kelpie is the perfect symbol for our community independent movement because it is local and represents the way I want to work for the people of south west Victoria - and just like the kelpie, I was born here too,” he said.

“As an Independent, I’ll work with the federal government to get a better deal for Wannon on urgent issues such as roads and childcare.

“It won’t matter who is in power - I’ll be there to work hard for the people of Wannon, not a political party.”

Terang volunteer Sara Napier said the kelpie signs were in demand.

“The production line is in full swing with our volunteer team recycling old corflute, cutting and painting kelpies,” she said.

“We also have limited edition kelpie badges that are handmade from reclaimed materials by a local volunteer and are available for sale at the community hubs.

“Lots of people are asking about the orange dog and it’s a great conversation starter about the importance of this community movement.”

The 2025 federal election will be Mr Dyson’s third campaign.

Community members and the Voices of Wannon group encouraged him to throw his hat in the ring again after his 2022 campaign saw Wannon become a marginal electorate for the first time in 67 years.

Mr Dyson is running as a community independent to get a better deal for south west Victoria.

With the current margin at four percent, the likelihood of Wannon changing hands for the first time in 70 years is now a very real possibility.
