Parks update: Well known tourist spot The Arch remains closed to the public more than 15 months after it was closed.

NO timeline has been given for the restoration of beach access at Loch Ard Gorge.

Parks Victoria acting regional director Dale Antonysen said geotechnical investigations at the popular spot had been completed.

“With geotechnical investigations completed we’re now working on the next steps to protect the special cultural and environmental values of Loch Ard before we start work to restore access to the beach,” he said.

“It is important we get this process right as we want to make sure the Gorge reopens for the long-term and what makes it so special is protected.”

The Arch also remains closed to the public after cracks were recorded in the concrete path leading to the upper lookout.

The closure has been in place since February 2022.

Parks Victoria acting area chief ranger Michelle Anstee said the Arch Lookout was closed after an internal inspection found significant movement in the cliffs near the Upper Lookout, which posed a significant risk to public safety.

“Geotechnical specialists have since assessed the cliff face around the lookout and recommended the site remain closed due to continued movement in the cliffs, which could lead to a collapse,” she said.

“We recognise the importance of this site to the local community and tourism sector, but as a responsible land manager we have to take a safety-first approach and close access when there’s a known risk of a landslide or cliff collapse.

“Please respect the closures and don’t put yourself at risk.”

Mr Antonysen said work had also resumed on the new Saddle Lookout.

“Following an environmental pause over winter, construction has recommenced on the new Saddle Lookout at the Twelve Apostles visitor precinct,” he said.

“We’re excited to be nearing completion of this unique facility, which will provide visitors a superior, safer and more accessible viewing experience.

“Contractors are currently preparing cladding for the lookout structure and creating new paths, ahead of the lookout being completed this summer.”
