The Roosters showed why they are the benchmark in the Hampden League, handing the Bombers their third loss for the season.

The Bombers slipped out of the top five after last Saturday’s result, with the Warrnambool Blues earning fifth place after defeating Portland at Reid Oval.

Final scores at the Cobden Recreation Reserve were Cobden 5.4.34 to South Warrnambool 17.13.115.

Best for the Bombers were Louis Robertson, Arthur Armstrong, Sam Lucas, Sam Darcy, Jesse Williamson and Tim Auckland.

Armstrong kicked two goals for the side while Ben Berry, Louis Robertson and Jesse Williamson kicked one apiece.

Earlier in the day, Cobden’s reserves side also felt the pressure from the top-of-the-table.

Roosters, going down by 44 points – 5.5.35 to 11.13.79.

Best for the home team were Patrick Mahony, Matt Clarke, Tarj Anderson, Noah Sinnott and Jordan Fowler.

Michael Koroneos kicked three goals for the Bombers while Brady Green and Safari McVilly added one each.

Cobden’s netballers also had a tough day out for round six, with the Open side going down to the undefeated Roosters, 43-36.

Bombers coach Sophie Hinkley said she was “thrilled” with how her side performed against one of the league’s fittest and strongest.

“We were super happy with how we performed on the weekend; the girls all did exceptionally well and there’s lots of positives we can take from the game,” Hinkley said.

“South are very fit and strong and even a one minute lull in our game can result in a couple of quick goals for South and that’s what happened.

“We had 10 players and with the rolling subs we were able to utilise them all and make some changes where and when needed which was nice.”

Hinkley said while the scoreboard showed a seven goal deficit on the final siren, the Bombers achieved several internal goals which would hold them in good stead for the coming rounds.

“We make the long trip to Portland this weekend and they’re always a good side at home so it’ll be another challenge for us, but we’ll have some momentum going into the game and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Best for the Bombers last Saturday were Nadine McNamara, Jaymie Finch and Nikki Clover.
