Lakers cause an upset
CAMPERDOWN upset finals contender Alvie in round 13 of the Colac-South West premier cricket competition on Saturday, winning by 26 runs.
Batting first at the Alvie Recreation Reserve, the Lakers were all out for 128 in 31.1 overs.
“Their ground was soft and slow and there wasn’t much value for your shots,” Camperdown captain Steven Fisher said.
Jordan Riches returned to the Lakers line-up, top scoring with 33 from 59 balls, hitting five boundaries.
“Jordan batted really well, he was able to put away the bad ball,” Fisher said.
“He hit the first ball he faced for four and just looked to be in the zone right from the start.”
Camperdown’s top order all made starts, with Jye McLaughlin making 19, Noah Riches 18 and Harry Sumner 16.
“It would have been nice if one of those three had of gone on with it, but there was plenty of promise in the way they batted.”
A 128 scoreline looked a long way off for the home team as they crashed to 9/63 in the 25th over.
Alvie’s last pair added 39 in the next 15 overs before Fisher took the final wicket; the hosts all out for 102.
“We just missed a run out when the score was 9/63, it could have been over much earlier.
“It was our best bowling performance of the year, especially to do that on a hard wicket.”
Nick Frith led the bowlers with 3/24 from 10 overs, while Harry Sumner took 3/30 from 10.
“Frithy had an ‘almost’ week the week before where things didn’t quite go his way, he got reward for effort on Saturday.
“Harry stepped up into the new ball role in the absence of James O’Neil really well and did a great job for us.”
This week Camperdown host Pomborneit for the annual Graham Hillman Shield clash.
“With finals out of contention, the Hillman Shield is the only bit of silverware we’ve got to play for now this season.
“If we can put our batting and bowling together we will have a big chance.”
In division three, Camperdown had a seven wicket loss to Pomborneit Maroon at South Purrumbete.
Batting first, the division three Lakers made 5/211 from their 40 overs.
Veterans Rob McLaughlin and Ross McIlveen led the way, making 69 from 62 balls and 65 not out from 88 balls respectively.
Wickets were hard to come by for Camperdown as Pomborneit Maroon passed the score in the 37th over.
Daniel Missen, Darren Frith and McIlveen took a wicket each.
Tomorrow the division three Lakers play Boorcan at Camperdown number two.
In the under 13s on Monday night, Camperdown was defeated by Pomborneit at Pomborneit.
The junior Lakers posted 5/89 batting first, with Beau Smith making 21 retired from six balls.
Pomborneit replied with 7/97, with Christopher Cronly taking 4/8 from three overs.
This Monday the top of the ladder under 13 Lakers play Cobden at Camperdown.
