Lakes and Craters in Melbourne: Camperdown’s Lakes and Craters Band were one of three regional bands represented at the annual Bandstand Sunday event in Melbourne recently.

Bandstand Sunday is an annual event held in November by the Victorian Bands League, providing a selection of affiliated bands in Victoria an opportunity to play at Federation Square in Melbourne in a non-competitive environment.

Lakes and Craters Band secretary, treasurer and deputy musical director Bernie Dunn said this was the band’s second year, having participated close to six years ago.

“It’s not the sort of thing you would do every year because there’s so many bands, and there’s only so few spaces available at Bandstand Sunday,” he said.

“Each band gets to perform for about half an hour, so you can only put about 10, 11 or 12 bands on.

“You’ve got to be rather fortunate to be selected to come and play.

“We did it five or six years ago; when we heard that it was on again this year, we put an expression of interest to the Victorian Bands League and they accepted our expression of interest and invited us to come and perform.”

Lakes and Craters Band were one of only three regionally-based bands, with the remaining two based in Ballarat.

Mr Dunn said thinking the day went well was, to him, an understatement.

“We think we showed the best we could do, and I think we had an extremely successful day,” he said.

“It was a long day, because we travelled down by bus in the morning, and then back again in the afternoon. We had a fantastic day out.

“We’ve got a number of new players, young players, and this was a huge experience for them. For some of them, it was their first experience performing in front of a sizeable crowd.

“It was quite a big experience for them, and it was fantastic experience. They really enjoyed it.”
