The tiger trout were released through the combined efforts of Victoria Fisheries Authority (VFA)’s Snobs Creek Hatchery team and the Lake Purrumbete and Camperdown angling clubs.

A VFA spokesperson said 3200 trout were released into Lake Purrumbete on Tuesday, while 3000 trout were released into Lake Bullen Merri on Thursday.

“These are the first tiger trout we’ve stocked this year, which will provide fishers at these iconic crater lakes another species to chase year-round,” the spokesperson said.

“Purrumbete and Bullen Merri are also the only two lakes in Australia stocked with Chinook salmon, making for a unique fishing experience offering trophy-sized trout and salmon.

“It’s all part of Victoria’s record-breaking stocking program, funded by the Victorian Government’s Go Fishing Victoria plan and recreational fishing licence fees.”

The 2025-2026 stocking season is set to see 40,000 Chinook salmon, 10,000 brown trout, 10,000 rainbow trout and 6000 tiger trout released into Lake Purrumbete this year.

Lake Bullen Merri is also expected to see strong stocking this year, with plans to release 50,000 Chinook salmon, 25,000 rainbow trout, 10,000 native Australian bass, 10,000 brown trout and 4000 tiger trout into the lake.

The stocking is part of the VFA’s plans to stock 10 million fish into Victorian lakes.
