Last quarter costly for Magpies
A LAST quarter goal kicking spree from South Warrnambool saw the Magpies go down by 92 points last weekend.
A LAST quarter goal kicking spree from South Warrnambool saw the Magpies go down by 92 points last weekend.
In front of a home crowd at Leura Oval on Saturday, the Magpies put in a solid effort against the second-placed Roosters according to coach Neville Swayn.
“Even though the scoreboard blew out in the final term, the scores really didn’t reflect the intensity the boys played,” Swayn said.
“The Roosters are a quality side and they made us work hard. The last quarter was certainly disappointing, they ran over the top of us, but up until then we had three quarters of good footy.
“We saw improvements in several areas that we had been working on; including how we shut our opposition down, our inside 50 counts and better use of the ball.”
Taking on the Rooters was always going to be a big task for the ninth placed Magpies.
The first quarter saw the home side kick 3.2.20 to the visitors’ 7.4.46.
The Magpies could only add three points to the board before the main break while the Roosters piled on three goals, one behind in the second term.
The third was a similar affair, with the Magpies finishing the quarter on 4.6.30 while the Roosters extended their lead to 13.7.85.
“Unfortunately we couldn’t get another major on the board in the last, while the Roosters added another six.”
Final scores Camperdown 4.8.32 to South Warrnambool 19.10.124.
Best for the home side were Joshua Place, Judah Dundon and Charlie Lucas.
Goals went to Sam Gordon, Charlie Lucas, Luke Molan and Tim Fitzgerald.
Camperdown’s reserves suffered a similar fate, going down the Roosters by 83 points.
Final scores: Camperdown 0.3.3 to South Warrnambool 12.14.86.
Best for the Magpies were Archie McBean, Shane Morgan, Leigh Ball, Nelson Loader, Luke Ball and Jordan Riches.
After this weekend’s bye round, the Magpies will take on local rivals Cobden in what Swayn believes will be a “good hit out.”
“We always enjoy playing Cobden,” he said.
“Last time we met I think they beat us by about three goals; we’ll be looking to turn that around and take home the four points.”
