Year Six student Rishab Neubane said the SRC boasted a diverse membership across year levels, ensuring everyone got to have a say.

“Two students from each class meet up with other students and talk about what the school needs, what the students want and what fundraising can be done to make the school a better place,” he said.

“Our home room teacher had a list of people who wanted to be an SRC member and everyone voted on new members.”

Year Nine student Amity Fleming said the SRC was able to make a tangible difference to the school.

“We’re able to make a lot of things happen around the school,” she said.

“We can do fundraisers for new equipment or charities we can donate to.

“We can look to make an impact in the community or look to something more school-based, such as having out-of-uniform days where donations can turn into new equipment or upgrades.

“It’s a way for everyone to get involved.”

Amity said giving students the opportunity to make their voices heard was important to creating a healthy environment for students to thrive.

“It’s so important for us to have a say,” she said.

“We’re the ones learning things, the ones that have to go through the experiences, so we have to have our own voices heard so students, the school council and the staff know what we like and what will benefit our learning.

“I like the leadership I get to have – I like having a form of responsibility because it prepares me for adulthood when I need to make certain decisions.

“This helps us build life skills which we will need.”

Rishab agreed with the sentiment the SRC was important to also build personal skills, saying he had gained greater confidence.

“It has helped me be able to talk to a large crowd, to the classroom, to be more social and be ready for challenges which we might not be ready for usually which come your way,” he said.
