Lions, CFA team up
THE Camperdown Lions Club is partnering with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) this year as part of their annual smoke alarm campaign.
Members of the Lions Club will be supported by CFA members as they test smoke alarms and replace 9V batteries on Saturday, April 5.
This partnership aims to support the Lions Club by eliminating the need for people to be climbing ladders to test and replace their smoke alarm batteries.
Throughout the day, teams from the Lions Club and CFA will visit households previously assisted by the Lions Club, to check smoke alarms and replace the 9V battery-operated alarms with 10-year lithium-ion battery smoke alarms, which only require regular testing and dusting.
CFA south west region community engagement coordinator Michael Dillon said the program ensured residents had working smoke alarms, which serve as the best defence against residential fires.
“Did you know that you lose your sense of smell when you sleep?” he said.
“Or that a smoke alarm’s effective lifespan is only 10 years?
“This program, part of CFA’s Smoke Alarm Installation Program, targets those who cannot obtain, install, or maintain smoke alarms themselves.
“For example, those who do not have family or friends locally to do so.
“Some exceptions to this program include rental properties where landlords are responsible, and hard-wired smoke alarms which require a licenced electrician to replace/service.”
Teams will be visiting homes from 9.30am and will be attending homes which are on the club’s list.
Residents who will not be home at the time of the testing and battery replacement, who have questions regarding the program, or are looking to request a visit are encouraged to contact Lions Club member Maree Belyea at camperdown.vic@lions.org.au or on 0417 352 987.
