Lismore students eager to clean
STUDENTS at Lismore Primary School participated in an educational event recently which promotes responsible waste disposal and the importance of keeping the environment clean.

The Lismore Land Protection Group partners with the school every year to run a Clean Up Australia Day event, which includes a tidy-up of the school yard.
The event was held on February 28, which linked with the official Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday, March 2.
Lismore Land Protection Group Landcare facilitator Sarah McMaster said the annual event was always a highlight on the calendar for both the land protection group and the students.
“We kicked off the day in the classroom with a fun and educational activity – which bin does the rubbish go In,” she said.
“Students were challenged to decide whether different types of waste belonged in the red bin (general waste) or the yellow bin (recycling).
“It was a great learning opportunity for everyone - even the adults.
“The students did an amazing job, showing great knowledge and care when sorting the waste.”
Students learned items such as takeaway coffee cups, some types of milk cartons and scrunch able soft plastics could not recycled, while hard plastics and paper could be recycled.
Ms McMaster said students then hit the school yard for the clean-up, armed with waste bags and gloves.
“Although the students do a fantastic job of keeping their school grounds tidy every day, we were surprised to still find bits of rubbish tucked away, likely blown in from outside the school,” she said.
“The kids were enthusiastic and thorough, working together to ensure every piece was picked up.
“We always love being part of this event, and it’s clear the students do too.
“Some even told us it’s their favourite day of the year because “we get to save the turtles”.
“A huge thank you to Lismore Primary School for another incredible day of learning, caring, and protecting our environment - we can’t wait to do it all again next year.”
