ST Patrick’s Primary School was recently visited by staff from St John’s Dennington and St Patrick’s Port Fairy to explore the successful changes that have been implemented in the teaching of literacy.

Over the past four years, St Patrick’s Primary School has undergone a journey of exploration into the world of structured literacy and its benefits for their students.

This has led to a change in the way reading, writing and spelling are taught from Foundation to grade six.

Principal Tim Bourke said the improvement in student learning outcomes has been “remarkable” and there was “renewed love of literacy across the school”.

“The phonics resource used by the school is ‘Little Learners Love Literacy’ and it provides the structure and materials needed in the junior years and many other contemporary programs are used in the middle and senior areas of the school,” he said.

“The visiting school leaders and teachers were delighted with what they saw and keen to implement this approach in their own schools.”
