Living a childhood dream
AS the Country Fire Authority (CFA) marks National Volunteer Week this week, a firefighter from the Camperdown brigade is encouraging anyone who may have dreamed of being a firefighter to put their hands up.

General firefighter Nicolas O’Brien moved to Camperdown from Melbourne two years ago and has been a proud member of the local brigade for a year and a half.
He said he saw a recruitment drive for the brigade not long after he moved and saw it as an opportunity to achieve a childhood dream.
“Growing up, I’ve always seen firefighters responding to incidents,” Mr O’Brien said.
“That made me want to be a firefighter when I grew up, but I ended up becoming a carpenter.
“When I moved from Melbourne to Camperdown two years ago, I saw they needed volunteers.
“I saw it as my chance to be able to do it.”
Mr O’Brien said his favourite thing about volunteering with the CFA was the camaraderie between members.
“Everyone’s got my back and I like how nice everyone is,” he said.
“When we’re out on an incident, everyone is able to help me.
“I’m still new – I’ve only been a member for a year and a half, and I’m still learning as everyone else is.
“They’re helping to guide me through, and I’ve always loved how everyone’s been able to help each other.”
Mr O’Brien encouraged anyone who might be considering volunteering to put their hand up, even if they are nervous about it.
“As terrified as you may be, it’s not as scary,” he said.
“You should do it.”
