CAMPERDOWN has locked in another set of coaches with Dave Young and Jye McLaughlin set to lead the Magpies reserves football side in 2021.

The pair’s appointment was made official on Sunday, with both players set to take on the coaching reins for the first time in their football careers.

The pair have both played senior footy for the club and are eager to embrace the opportunity ahead of them.

“I’m a little bit nervous but overall I’m excited to get Jye on board and be co-coach with him,” Young said.

“There’s probably been a lack of opportunity throughout this year with what’s happened so for this to pop up and to be able to have a crack at it is pretty exciting,” McLaughlin added.

While season 2020 has been a whitewash for footballers across the state, the pair is already in the planning phase for next season.

They said they plan to work closely with senior coach Neville Swayn to implement the same game plan at both levels, with minor changes at reserve level.

Among their other aims include preparing their players to transition to senior footy and luring former and new players to Camperdown.

“Everyone’s had a year out of football which makes the pre-season longer, your body is going to be more tired and weary and the opportunities for injuries may pop up more as we’ve seen this year so we want the guys to be ready to step up if they’re called upon,” McLaughlin said.

“Hopefully, by all reports, there are 13 or 14 kids to come up from the under 18s, so it’s going to be a pretty young team which is ideal for a reserves team.”

“We’ve already thrown a few names around so hopefully we’ll be able to get a couple of new faces to the club,” Young added.

“We also want to get all the home grown players around the club again.”

Camperdown president Kevin Russell said the club was pleased to appoint two local players in Young and McLaughlin early.
