Local runners enjoy Melbourne festival

A GROUP of dedicated local runners have again finished strongly in this year’s Melbourne Running Festival.

The festival, held on Sunday October 15, attracted thousands of competitors from across the state in the 42km marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km events.

Members of Camperdown’s Lakes and Craters Runners, who meet three times a week for early morning runs around town, enjoyed the ideal conditions.

“It was a great day out; lots of people, ideal weather and a great atmosphere,” group member Gary O’Neil said.

“We’ve travelled down there as a group several times in the past and really look forward to it.”

Results from the 42km marathon were as follows:

Luke Woodmason placed 1089 out of field of 7945 (132nd from 709 athletes in the 40-44 year age group) in a time of 3 hours 17 min 3 sec.

Davina Pickles finished 1567 overall (fifth from 184 in the 45-49 years) in a time of 3 hours 26 minutes 7 sec.

Meta Vincent completed the marathon in a time of 3 hours 26 min 8 sec to finish 1568 (fifth from 141 in the 50-54 years).

Paul Kingston crossed the line in 3 hours 54 min 44 sec, finishing 25th of 103 in the 60-64 years age bracket.

In the half marathon, results were as follows:

Dale Wills finished in a time of 1 hour 47 min 18 sec (167 of 551 in the 40-44 years).

Kim Helmore finished in 1 hour 50 min and placed seventh of 134 in the 55-59 years section.

Charlene Elsum finished in 2 hours 6 min 32 sec to cross the line 366th from 806 in the 30-34 years.

Gary O’Neil finished in 1 hour 55 min 43 sec, crossing the line 73rd of 188 in the 55-59 years.

Tara Cumming crossed the line in 1 hour 42 min 34 sec to finish 12th of 334 in the 45-49 years.

Paula Duynhoven finished 78th from 260 entrants in the 50-54 years age group, completing the course in 2 hours 2 min 30 sec.

In the 10km event:

Mick Kavanagh finished 114th of 222 athletes in the 50-54 year category in a time of 58 min 29 sec.

Felicity Wills also competed in the 10km event (results not known).

“We run in and around Camperdown from 6am every Tuesday and Thursday and at 8am on Sundays,” Mr O’Neil said.

“New members are always most welcome to join us; we meet at the Loaf n Lounge each of those mornings regardless of the weather.”
