Loch Ard Gorge still closed

LOCH Ard Gorge will remain closed this summer as the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority continues to evaluate options for the iconic site.

Since assuming management of Port Campbell National Park, including Loch Ard Gorge, in August, the authority has been working through site-specific environmental factors to understand whether restoring access to the site is possible.

This includes exploring medium—and long-term solutions which ensure safe access while preserving the area’s environmental and cultural values.

The beach access was closed by Parks Victoria in May 2023 following a rock fall over the steps, making the area unsafe for visitors.

An independent geotechnical inspection has confirmed significant safety risks posed by the cliff's instability remain.

Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority director infrastructure and planning Cath Olive thanked the community for its patience.

“As a responsible land manager, we have to take a safety-first approach when there's a known risk of a landslide or cliff collapse,” she said.

“We understand the importance of Loch Ard Gorge to the local community and visitors alike, and we’re grateful for everyone’s patience as we navigate the next steps.”

The authority will work closely with Parks Victoria and Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation to identify options that prioritise public safety and protect the area's cultural heritage.

Locals and visitors alike were urged to respect the closure and follow all fencing and safety signage in place.
