Looking at Mortlake through the lens of time

MOYNE Shire is marking the Australian Heritage Festival with a series of open days, events, and a historic photo exhibition with a modern twist.

The historic photo exhibition for the festival will give viewers a look into the past with 27 historic photos linked to QR codes around the shire.

The QR codes are printed on A4 signs located outside selected historic places and buildings.

When visitors find a sign, they can simply scan the QR code with a smart device and be transported to the past to view a historic photo of the place or building.

The QR code signs will be available throughout the duration of the festival from this week until May 18, 2024.

Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the signs are located in public spaces, easily accessible for everyone to get involved.

In Mortlake signs are located at Montgomery Pavilion, Dunlop Street and the historic Bluestone Mill.

“It will be a fun challenge to locate each one. Can you find all 27 signs,” Cr Smith said.

“The festival is a great opportunity for the community to explore our rich and diverse heritage.

“The 2024 festival’s theme of connections acknowledges our link to people, places and the past, which create enduring connections.”

Scheduled events in Port Fairy will include walking tours, cemetery tours, lighthouse open day, and historic house open days.

Mortlake and Koroit offer self-guided heritage walking trails, using walking maps which highlight historic locations in each town.
