CLEAR skies have seen rainfall below the long-term average recorded in Terang and Mortlake to start 2023, after high rainfall washed over the region last year.

The beginning of 2023 was in stark contrast to the previous year, when widespread flooding left a trail of destruction across the state; including a number of roads damaged or flooded across the region.

Terang experienced 906mm of rainfall during 2022, above the long-term expected average of 779.8mm.

The figure marked an increase on the previous year, with 819mm falling throughout 2021.

The wettest month for the year was October with 131.2mm of rain hitting the ground.

The wettest day occurred in March, with 38.2mm falling on March 5.

The driest month was February, with only 2.4mm of rainfall recorded.

Mortlake experienced 756.4mm of rainfall throughout 2022, well above the 588.3mm long-term expected average.

The highest monthly rainfall occurred in October when 146.8mm hit the ground, in addition to the highest daily rainfall with 50mm falling on October 13.

February was the driest month, with just 2mm recorded.
