Magpies competitive but Bloods hold on
CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers once again proved competitive against a top side last Saturday, going down to Terang Mortlake by 28 points.
The Bloods led all day to run out 13.9.87 to 8.11.59 winners in the round 10 Hampden League clash at the Terang Recreation Reserve.
“It was one of those games where it felt like we had our fair share of ball, Terang Mortlake are a good team with good efficiency into their forward line,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
“They hurt us on turnovers, we had a few unforced skill errors, but on the same token we probably created just as many opportunities as what they did, but their execution was a little bit better than ours.”
Defender Angus Gordon was best for the Magpies in the loss.
“Angus is playing some good footy at the moment down back, we’ve been really happy with what he’s been doing down there, he’s found a niche.
“He locks down well, but he gives us a lot on the counter punch as well.”
Wilba Cheeseman continued his strong vein of form and was named second best.
“Wilba’s found his groove, he’s hungry to compete.
“Previously, he was a kid that was running around, now he genuinely looks like a senior footballer, one of the boys that you can just set your clock on now.”
Bailey Thompson was again Camperdown’s best but now faces a stint on the sidelines.
“Unfortunately, Bailey has broken his finger so we won’t get him back until the last three rounds.
“He’s been unlucky not to be in the best week in, week out, he obviously is coming up against some pretty good opposition, and he’s been competing well in the ruck in a position he’s not normally accustomed to playing, so he’s been really quite pivotal for us.”
Ned Molan continues to be a forward threat and led the Magpies goal scorers with three.
“I think the opposition are now starting to take a little bit of note of what Ned provides and the threat that he is, obviously with his name appearing in the paper a little bit.
“He’s not quite taking the game by the scruff of the neck, but he’s certainly threatening, he’s very close to taking his footy to another level, if we can get him just converting on a few more opportunities, he’ll be a real threat in the years to come.”
This week Camperdown host seventh placed Hamilton at the Leura Oval.
“They’re always tough, they’ve had a big year of improvement this year.
“Every game’s a tough one, it’s what we expect now, we’ll still have our opportunities that hopefully we can make the most of.”
The reserves match saw Camperdown score an 8.8.56 to 7.7.49 win, their first victory of the season.
Solly Mahony, Ethan Coates and Isaac McVilly were Camperdown’s best in the win, with Mahony and Nick Jones kicking two goals each.
Terang Mortlake had an 85 point win in the under 18s, 15.11.101 to 2.4.16.
Ethan Shadforth, Charlie Londregan and Dusty Lane were best for the under 18 Magpies, with Shadforth and Isaac Cootesmith kicking a goal each.
In the under 16 football, Camperdown scored a big 99 point win, 18.15.123 to 4.0.24.
Best for the Magpies were Miller Lockhart, Isaac Lawlor, Jonty Raven, Mason Narik, Alex Huggins and Josh Finlayson, with Lockhart kicking five goals, Isaac Lawlor and Archie McDonald three each with Narik and Finlayson two each.
The under 14 game saw Terang Mortlake win 7.3.45 to 6.6.42.
Oscar Pyle, Edie Molan and Darby Sinnott were best for Camperdown, with Oscar Pyle kicking four goals.
In the under 12 football, Camperdown scored a 6.7.43 to 2.2.14 win.
Best for the junior Magpies were William Sinnott, Audrey Hassett, Ned Pyle, Ruaraidh Menzies and Jay Finlayson, with Sinnott kicking three goals with one each to Finlayson, Roy Molan and George Titmus.
In the Open netball, Camperdown got its first win of the season with a 74-60 victory.
Camperdown coach Jill Leader missed the game due to being unwell but was able to see the winning moment.
“I was watching the game on live scores, and I was getting so excited,” Leader said.
“At the end of the game, I was sitting on the edge of my seat, just getting so excited for the girls.
“Then one of the parents facetimed me, so I watched the last two minutes of the game and was on the bench when the girls came off, it was so exciting.”
The win was a good reward for the work the team has been doing during the week.
“Everything just came together that we’ve been working on the last few weeks.
“We’ve been working on effort, just keeping effort levels up really high at training and working under pressure, and a lot of that’s just seemed to have really kicked in.”
Charlotte Hinds made her Open debut for Camperdown in the win.
“Overall, Charlotte played about 15 minutes over a few quarters and did really, really well by all accounts, she’s been coming along really nicely in division one, we gave her the chance and she stood up really nicely.
“She’s been a really amazing contributor in div one, playing across all midcourt positions, she’s just such a versatile and smart little player.”
Piper Stephens led the scoring with 39 goals and was named best, with Nell Mitchell shooting 35.
“Apparently Piper played her best game in a long time.
“Her workload is quite huge, so sometimes when she comes back, you can see she’s very tired, but on Saturday apparently she was just on fire, and when Piper’s on fire, she’s lovely to watch.”
The division one netball went the way of Terang Mortlake who had a 41-38 win.
Isobel Sinnott, Isla Fleming and Isobel Marwood were best for Camperdown, with Kiara Love shooting 19 goals and Marwood 12.
The division two game saw Terang Mortlake score a 40-28 win.
Sarah Spokes shot 13 goals and Grace Dawson 11 in the loss, with Hope Kerr, Spokes and Taylor Cameron best.
Camperdown scored a 43-36 victory in division three.
Best for the Magpies were Lily Baker, Sondi Guthrie and Audrey Ringe, with Lauren Groen shooting 25 goals and Baker 18.
Terang Mortlake had a tight 63-41 win in the 17 and under netball.
Kiara Love shot 33 goals, and was named in the best alongside Charlotte Hinds and Sasha Kerr.
The 17 and under reserves saw a 37-24 win to Terang Mortlake.
Meg Lafferty, Mia Oates and Matéa McKenzie were best for Camperdown, with McKenzie scoring 19 goals.
The 15 and under game saw Camperdown score a big 50-15 win.
Mali Maskell, Abigail Sinnott and Violet McDowall were best for the Magpies, with Sinnott shooting 34 goals.
In the 15 and under reserves netball, Terang Mortlake had a 32-22 win.
Best for Camperdown were Ruby Johnston, Reagan Webb and Ava Lafferty, with Ruby Johnston shooting 16 goals.
The 13 and under game saw a 26-25 win to Camperdown.
Essi Myers, Bella Brebner and Zoe Unwin were Camperdown’s best, with Marlee Fitxgerald scoring 10 goals.
The 13 and under reserves game ended in a 34-7 win to Terang Mortlake.
For the junior Magpies, Emilia Narik, Olivia Simmonds and Holly Anne Brooks were named as best, with Poppy Gaut shooting five goals.
