CAMPERDOWN Magpies open netball suffered a down year in 2022, as the side’s younger roster faced the tribulations of earning their strips at the open level.

Coach Leah Sinnott said she had seen growth from the squad throughout the year, however inconsistency stood in the way of winning efforts.

“At the start of the season we definitely couldn’t hold four quarters together, we’d play well for a couple and then fall off the radar,” she said.

“I feel like we probably played a good strong four quarters towards the later stages of the season.

“At times I think some decision making is due to a lack of experience with a lot of the younger players coming through, but on the whole I don’t think that’s been a major influence in the outcome of games.”

Sinnott praised the efforts of the junior players who had often made their mark at the open level, consistently earning a place among the top players.

“Having younger players has impacted us, I think perhaps in really clinch moments, sometimes inexperience does show through there,” she said.

“Our Under 17 girls who came up certainly matured and grew throughout the season, which was the likes of Mary Place, Sophie Conheady and Ella Sadler.

“To play two games each week is a feat in itself, but to be able to grow with the game and mature in to their positions in a way that allowed them to play against some of the league’s top players and hold their own.”

Sinnott said despite the tough year, the Magpies had shown signs of a bright future on the court.

“We’ve got a lot of great juniors coming through, some perhaps will need another year or two to step up, but I would certainly be assuming the three which took the court for us each week will be starters next season,” she said.
