Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas was feeling comfortable at half-time, despite the Magpies being down by 23 points.

“I felt at half-time we’d arrested the momentum back – monitoring how the opposition were going we were confident we had the fitness to run it out,” Thomas said.

Run it out they did, with Camperdown kicking nine second half goals to Hamilton’s one.

“We didn’t play our brand early and felt we made the game harder than we needed to.

“Once we got on top we had the fitness to go on with it, despite the heat.”

Thomas was pleased with the winners Camperdown had all over the ground.

“Luke Kavenagh was outstanding in the ruck, for an 18 year old to come up against a player of the size and quality of Levi Dare and beat him was brilliant.

“Hamish Sinnott just pops up, he's electric, impactful, plays in bursts and lifts us.

“Charlie Lucas is a workhorse and gives us fantastic leadership while Riley Arnold did a big job on (Hamilton forward) Darcy Russell which was important.”

The day had a family element, with Thomas coaching against his brother, Hamilton coach Brad.

“Made for an interesting day coaching against Brad, I did feel for him later in the game when we were on top.”

Thomas’ son Alec also featured, the former Cavendish senior player making his Camperdown senior debut.

Pleased with the result, Thomas is focused on development.

“In the bigger picture, we are all about growth,” he said.

“Wins are great but inconsequential in where we are aiming.

“The game was a great day of growth for both clubs.”

In the reserves, Hamilton defeated Camperdown by 41 points, Tarkyn Love kicking three goals, Jake Clissold and Isaac McVilly named among the best players for the Magpies.

Hamilton won all four junior games, with Ned Molan best for Camperdown.

Noah Riches kicked two goals in the under 18s 125 point loss while Paddy Hassett was the Magpies best in the under 16s 121 point loss.

Miller Murphy, Charlie Bourke and Darby Sinnott were named as best players in Camperdown’s 91 point loss in the under 14s.

The under 12s played in football’s return to the Camperdown Showgrounds, going down by just eight points, with Fergus Lillie named best and Freddie Lillie kicking three goals.
