Magpies hold on for narrow win
CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers upset Terang Mortlake for the second time in 2025, holding on for a two-point win at the Leura Oval.

The 13.9.87 to 12.13.85 win was the Magpies fourth senior football win of the season and keeps them in touch with the top five.
“We played really good footy, it’s always nice to beat a local rival,” a happy Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
Camperdown went into three quarter time with a 23-point lead and had to work hard to hold off a fast finishing Terang Mortlake who kicked five goals to two in the final term.
“We went into our shell a bit in the last quarter, but having said that we did have chances to put them away and didn’t take them,” Thomas said.
“It was good to hold on and win, I felt we played better for longer in the game than they did.”
Zach Sinnott was named best for his 33 possession game.
“Zach worked really hard for those possessions, they were all earnt.”
Forwards Bayley Thompson and Aidan Conheady kicked four goals each for the Magpies.
“Bayley has been thereabouts all season; he’s been putting in a lot of work and he was always threatening on Saturday.
“Aidan had an interesting match, he has that x factor, he’s a natural athlete who is a very hard match up for the opposition.”
Thomas also praised Jonty Lafferty, saying the defender put in his best game of the season.
This week Camperdown travels to take on Hamilton at Melville Oval.
“We’re looking forward to a good hit out against Hamilton, they’re a good stoppage team, particularly at home on the smaller Melville Oval.”

At one stage in the last quarter Camperdown held a five-goal lead before the Bloods finished strongly.
“We lost a bit of structure in that final quarter,” Camperdown coach Jill Leader said.
“It was disappointing to give up that lead.”
Goal shooter Nell Mitchell was rated by Leader as the Magpies best for her 24 goal effort.
“Nell played a fantastic all round game, she was very steady under the goal post,” Leader said.
Annaliese Hughes, Rosie Pickles and Piper Stephens, who scored 26 goals, were also in Camperdown’s best.
“Annaliese and Rosie were immense in defence, they were solid all day.
“Piper was always dangerous around goal, she’s a real talent.”
While disappointed not to get the full points, Leader was happy with what her youthful team took out of the game.
“There were some good lessons for our young players that will hold them in good stead,” she said.
“Full credit to Terang Mortlake, they played with plenty of tenacity and never gave up.”
Leader said the Magpies wouldn’t be taking bottom placed Hamilton lightly this week.
“It’s a must-win game, the top four have opened a bit of a gap on us in fifth, we want to be on top of that next section of teams.
“There are no easy games in the competition.”
