Magpies still on the hunt for a win
CAMPERDOWN is still without a win in the Hampden League senior football competition in 2026 after a 45-point loss at Portland in last Saturday’s round seven clash.
The Magpies were down by just two points at three-quarter time, with the home team kicking seven goals to none with the wind in the final term to record a 16.12.108 to 9.9.63 win at Hanlon Park.
Camperdown kicked six goals to two in the first quarter, before Portland stormed back into the game.
“It’s a bit frustrating because it felt like we were controlling the play early and then within five minutes of the second quarter they went bang, bang, bang and were back to within two points,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
“Then we were able to hold them, but we arrested the flow a bit too late and it became a bit of an arm wrestle, unfortunately it’s one that slipped through the fingers.”
The third quarter was where Thomas felt the game got away from the Magpies.
“It blew out at the end, but being within two points at three-quarter time, you think you’re in with a chance anyway.
“We didn’t capitalise on it enough in the third to really set ourselves up with a defendable total.”
Harry Sumner returned to the team for the first time in 2026 and gathered 24 disposals to be Camperdown’s best.
“It was great having Harry get a bit of a run in, he pretty much hits the ground running that guy, he kept himself fit all the way throughout.
“Harry came into the preseason really good, unfortunately he got that injury at the last training before round one which was unfortunate, but he’s one of these guys that just always holds his fitness and hits the ground running immediately.”
Wilba Cheeseman also played a strong game.
“It was a good four quarter effort from Wilbur.
“He can have patches where he drifts in and out, but from that end, he strung it together nicely on Saturday.”
Teenager Aidan Conheady played his first senior game of 2026 and kicked two goals.
“Aidan has been away with his netball commitments so with all things considered, he was good.
“He’s had a few run arounds in the ressies for the first couple of weeks just to get a bit of footy in the hand, he deserved the call up, and made the most of it.”
Another young player in Ned Molan was the other multiple goal kicker for Camperdown, also with two.
“Ned’s been presenting well and playing some good footy for us.”
Tomorrow sees Camperdown host local rival Cobden at the Leura Oval.
“Cobden has a good team, they sort of break the mould a little bit when you look at how teams play.
“They’re a dangerous team and are going to be solid opposition.”
The reserves match saw Portland score an 13.4.82 to 2.5.17 win.
Luke Bone, Jack Hookway and Nick Castle were Camperdown’s best, with Riley Bernoth and Nelson Loader kicking a goal each.
Portland had a 110 point win in the under 18s, 17.15.117 to 0.7.7.
Cooper Doolan, Elijah Thomas and Jordan Kempton were best for the under 18 Magpies.
Camperdown won the under 16 football by forfeit.
Camperdown got the points in the under 14 football, 15.8.98 to 1.1.7.
Harry Sinnott, Darby Sinnott and Harrison Pyle were the Magpies best, with Harry Sinnott bagging six goals.
The Magpies had a 71 point win in the under 12 football, 11.7.73 to 0.2.2.
George Titmus kicked three goals, with best players being Audrey Hassett, Lewie West and Aidan Gardiner.
In the Open netball, Portland got the points with a 50-42 win.
Madison Lucas, Indiana Cameron and Nell Mitchell were best for Camperdown, with Mitchell shooting 29 goals.
In division one, Camperdown scored a 44-42 win.
Kiara Love, Isobel Sinnott and Chloe O’Brien were best for the Magpies, with Love scoring 32 goals.
The division two game saw Portland score a 41-35 win.
Grace Dawson shot 19 goals and Jocelyn McDonald 16, with Taylor Cameron, Dawson and Hope Kerr best.
Camperdown recorded a 47-32 victory in division three.
Best for Camperdown were Lauren Murphy, Sondi Guthrie and Audrey Ringe, with Lauren Groen scoring 27 goals and Lily Baker 20.
Camperdown had a 33-30 win in the 17 and under netball.
Tatum Courtney, Maisie Molan and Sasha Kerr were named as best, with Kiara Love shooting 21 goals.
There was no 17 and under reserves game.
The 15 and under game saw Camperdown score a 35-28 win.
Mali Maskell, Taylor Cameron and Abigail Sinnott were best for the Magpies, with Sinnott shooting 24 goals.
In the 15 and under reserves netball, Portland had a 30-20 win.
Best for Camperdown were Ruby Johnston, Zhai Lyons and Vogue Fleming, with Johnstone shooting 17 goals.
The 13 and under game saw a 21-14 win to the Magpies.
Alexa Raven, Zoe Unwin and Emma Lillie were Camperdown’s best in the win, with Luella Rylance shooting 11 goals.
Camperdown’s 13 and under reserves team registered a 16-9 win.
For the junior Magpies, Poppy Gaut scored seven goals, with Maddison Lyne, Holly Anne Brooks and Amber Narik named as best.
