Magpies swoop at Colac

A SPECIAL ‘Star of the Green’ fundraising event will take place at the Camperdown Golf Magpies Bowling Club today (Friday).

This event, which is due to start at 11am, is being organised by Kellarnie Edwards and her family who are raising funds for Brain Cancer Research.

All members are most welcome to attend and to bring along any spare change to donate.

Anyone who cannot attend but would like to make a donation to this worthy cause is encouraged to see Kell or Janet Molan.

Congratulations to club member Leanne Fitzgerald, and Jodie Bertrand from Apollo Bay, who finished runners-up in the final of the association pairs at City last Sunday.

The Magpies’ division one Saturday team had its first win of the season last Saturday when they defeated Colac Central by 14 shots with a three rinks to one, 94-80 win.

Paul Richards’ rink of Chris Pearson, John Molan and James Henry led the way with a nine shot win over Ron Chapman’s rink, 25-16.

Glenn Winsall’s rink of Peter Reilly, Leanne Fitzgerald and Greg Teal went down to Chris Price’s rink by one shot, 22-23.

David Bateman’s rink of Gary Body, Isaac Winsall and Jack Paasse defeated Brian Finn’s rink by two shots, 23-21.

Craig Skene’s rink of Billy Conheady, Andrew Anderson and Taj Merrett had a four shot win over Ian Johnson’s rink 24-20.

Tomorrow Golf is at home to Colac City who are coming off a loss to Simpson last weekend.

Another strong showing is expected from Golf and a win will see them improve their position on the ladder.

Congratulations to Mark Winsall on playing his first division one game for the Magpies.

Division one teams for tomorrow are:

Jack Paasse, Isaac Winsall, Gary Body and David Bateman (s/m).

Greg Teal, Mark Winsall, Peter Reilly and Glenn Winsall (s).

James Henry, John Molan, Chris Pearson and Paul Richards (s).

Taj Merrett, Andrew Anderson, Billy Conheady and Craig Skene (s).

In division two Golf had the long road trip to Lorne and after a convincing first half which saw them one shot down at afternoon tea, the wheels fell off and they went down 84-126.

Wayne Henry’s rink of Pam Place, Daryl O’Donohue and Noelene Tolland continued their good form with a seven shot win over Brad Weetman’s rink 27-20.

Terry Place’s rink of Greg Molan, Stephen Lucas and Greg Edwards lost to Allan Walls’ rink 19-40.

Algie White’s rink of Noel Brebner, John O’Donohue and Ray Bateman put up a good performance to draw with Paul Staley’s rink, 24 shots each.

Kevin Russell’s rink of Peter James, Dan Stewart and Thomas Henry went down to Sheryl Donne’s rink 14-42.

Tomorrow division two has another long road trip to Apollo Bay to take on the league leaders so a tough game is expected.

If Golf can get off to a good start it may set them up for a great away win.

It was good to see Jamie Norton back for the Magpies.

Division two teams at Apollo Bay are:

Ray Bateman, Noel Brebner, John O’Donohue and Allan White (s).

Noelene Tolland, Daryl O’Donohue, Pam Plaec and Jamie Norton (s).

Greg Edwards, Sam Clarke, Terry Place and Chris McLeod (s).

Thomas Henry, Peter James, Ro Dunstan and Dan Stewart (s/m).

Division three fought hard all day but was unable to overcome a strong Colac City team going down 66-92.

This was a very encouraging effort by the team as they had several juniors playing as well as first game player, Ben Gaut, who all acquitted themselves well.

John Salau’s rink of Kona Kerr, Keira Johnston and Zac Regan had a good second half to go down 16 shots to Pat Howard’s rink, 11-27.

Rene Wyles’ rink of Mark Winsall, Ruth Skene and Ben Gaut had a great win over Trevor Bartlett’s rink 22-18.

Gary Mitchell’s rink of Mark Wallace, Pat Scott and James Wallace never gave up and went down to Royden Copeland’s rink 17-23.

Garry Brian’s rink of Janet Molan, Andrew Whiteside and Steph Whiteside also fought hard all day and went down to Stephen Fanelli’s rink 16-24.

Tomorrow sees Golf 3 away to Camperdown and with both sides currently winless a close game is expected.

It was good to see Mick Mahony back for the pies and no doubt he will be pushing for division one selection soon.

Teams for Golf 3 away to Camperdown:

Elaine Waterfall, Keira Johnson, Kona Kerr and John Salau (s).

Janet Molan (m), Andrew Whiteside, Norma Weller and Garry Brian (s).

Xavier Crabbe, Ruth Skene, Carol Wilson and Rene Wyles (s).

Trish Taylor, Pat Scott, Michael Mahony and Trey Darcy (s).

In mid-week pennant last Tuesday, division one travelled to Colac City and had a tough day, losing 52-89.

Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of Craig Skene, Elaine Waterfall and Greg Teal went down to Linda Inglis’ rink 24-33.

Peter Reilly’s rink of Pam Place, Janet Molan and Kell Edwards lost to Carol Hanson’s rink 16-28.

Barb Boyd’s rink of Rene Wyles, John O’Donohue and Noelene Tolland lost to Rebecca McMahon’s rink 12-28.

The loss saw Golf drop to sixth on the ladder but only four points out of the top four.

There will be no games next Tuesday due to the Melbourne Cup holiday.

In division three, Golf was at home to City 3 and finished up with a nine shot win, 64-55.

Peter James’ rink of Garry Brian, Pat Scott and Ro Dunstan had a three shot win over Gerard Norman’s rink, 20-17.

Marg Stephens’ rink of Norma Weller, Steph Whiteside and Kathy Banks had a good win over Roger Seager’s rink, 25-13.

Carol Wilson’s rink of Noel Brebner, Ruth Skene and Terri Sinnott went down to Thomas Lloyd’s rink 19-25.

This win saw Golf remain in second place on the ladder.

The men’s B grade championship finished last Sunday, with John O’Donohue taking on Paul Richards.

John started well and skipped out to eight shots to one, leading early.

Paul gradually fought his way back into the game and led 19-18.

John held his nerve with some fine bowling over the last two ends to take the title, 21-19.

The men’s 100 UP will start this Sunday with some interesting match-ups to be played.

This will include Greg Edwards (-10) taking on John O’Donohue (-10) and young guns Kona Kerr (scratch) and Sam Clarke (also on scratch) will also face each other.

Roll up will be at 9.45am for a 10am start.
