Magpies swoop on Giants
SPRING came early for the Camperdown Golf Magpies Bowling Club’s division one Saturday team last weekend.
The side travelled down the hill to take on the Camperdown Giants and returned home with a 18 shot victory, 100-82.
With neither team in contention for finals this season, bragging rights were on the line and Golf managed to get across the line with two rinks-all win.
David Bateman’s rink of John Molan, Mick Mahony and Ash Sinnott, who trailed Luke Wright’s rink at afternoon tea 9-11, stormed home to win 30-12.
Glenn Winsall’s rink of Peter Reilly, Dan Stewart and Jack Paasse were the other winners, defeating Mark McDonald’s rink 28-18.
Billy Conheady’s rink of Chris Pearson, Graeme Fitzgerald and Daryl O’Donohue went down by five shots, 19-24.
Craig Skene’s rink of Kev Conheady, Jamie Norton and Greg Teal had a tight tussle all day eventually going down 23-28.
Although Golf’s season started badly, losing their first three games, they came home strongly to win three of their last four.
With a strong group of younger bowlers coming through the other divisions, the future looks very bright for the club.
Golf’s Saturday division two team continued its great form with a mammoth 59 shot win over Central, 129-70.
Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of Kevin Russell, Sam Whytcross and Ray Bateman led the way with a huge 28 shot win over Lynton Evans’ rink, 38-10.
Paul Richards’ rink of Wayne Henry, Taj Merrett and Greg Molan had an off day but only went down by two shots to Edward Ivermee’s rink 26-28.
Chris McLeod’s rink of Terry Place, Mark Winsall and Greg Edwards had a huge win over Leonard Armistead’s rink, 35-11.
Michael Brebner’s rink of Algie White, Andrew Anderson and Noel Brebner finished off the good day with a nine-shot win over Roger Seager’s rink, 30-21.
Tomorrow sees division two play in the cut-throat first semi-final against Cressy at Derrinallum.
This should be a ripper of a game with both teams having defeated each other earlier in the season.
Cressy won the round six game by one shot, 89-88, and Golf won the round 13 game by four, 86-82.
Teams for tomorrow’s first semi-final against Cressy at Derrinallum (bus leaves at 11.15am):
Greg Molan, Taj Merrett, Wayne Henry (m) and Paul Richards (s).
Michael Mahony, Andrew Anderson, Algie White and Michael Brebner (s).
Ray Bateman, Sam Whytcross, Kevin Russell and Leanne Fitzgerald (s).
Greg Edwards, Mark Winsall, Terry Place and Chris McLeod (s).
Emergency: Isaac Winsall.
Scribes’ prediction is that Golf can win on all four rinks and take the win by 23 shots, 101-78.
Golf division four (3) played an away game against Cobden and the home team proved too strong for the Magpies, winning by five despite winning only one of the three rinks on a very tricky green.
Ro Dunstan’s rink of John O’Donohue, Val Coverdale and Elaine Waterfall had an unusually bad day going down 8-31.
Rene Wyles’ team of Janet Molan, Liz Riches and Noelene Tolland had a good win, 24-17.
Peter James’ rink of Pam Place, George Bateman and Sam Clarke were the big winners on the day, winning 27-16.
Tomorrow sees Golf four (3) start its finals series against Winchelsea in the second semi-final at Colac City Bowls Club.
These two teams last played each other in round nine when Golf won on all rinks, 74-45.
Teams for tomorrow (skips to arrange transport) are:
Sam Clarke, Garry Brian, Pam Place and Peter James (s).
Noelene Tolland, Liz Riches, Janet Molan (m) and Rene Wyles (s).
Elaine Waterfall, John O’Donohue, Mark Wallace and Ro Dunstan (s).
Emergency: Denis Place.
Scribes’ prediction: Golf by 13 shots, 65-52.
Golf’s division four (4) once again proved to be the unluckiest team of the season.
After defeating Lismore/Camperdown by 25 shots, 77-52, they then missed out on finals by 10 points.
Mark Wallace’s team of Gary Mitchell, Pat Scott and Trish Taylor finished the season in style with a 14-shot win over Lyn Brown’s rink 28-14.
Young gun Isaac Winsall’s rink of John Salau, Zach Regan and Andrew Whiteside also had a good day, winning 28-18.
Denis Place’s rink of Kona Kerr, Ella Blyth and Xavier Crabbe finished off a great day with a one shot win, 21-20.
Golf four (4) can be proud of their season having lost a lot of games by just three shots or less during the season.
A lot of young players had their first season of bowls, and these players will start to step up through the ranks next season. Well done everyone.
Tuesday’s division three players were the stars of the week with a preliminary final win over Colac City last Tuesday at Colac Lakes.
The 14 shot win, 70-56, sees the Magpies team storm into the grand final to play Derrinallum next Tuesday at Colac Lakes.
The game will start at 9am.
Liz Riches’ rink of Noel Brebner, Ella Blyth and Val Coverdale had the big win of the day over Donald Spalding’s rink, 28-15.
Peter James’ rink of Denis Place, Ruth Skene and Kell Edwards bowled brilliantly to record a five shot win over Graham Harris’s rink, 25-20.
Marg Stephens’ rink of Norma Weller, Pat Scott and Terri Sinnott bowled well all day to narrowly go down by four shots to Gerard Maloney’s rink, 17-21.
Golf and Derrinallum have played three times this season with the score Golf 1 Derrinallum 2 so a close grand final can be expected.
Prediction - Golf to win by one shot, 70-69.
The highlight of last Tuesday’s preliminary final win was the form of the ever-reliable Ella Blyth.
Ella bowled brilliant all day but left her best to the last end, with her final two bowls both being touchers.
The team for next Tuesday’s grand final at Colac Lakes:
Kell Edwards, Ruth Skene, Denis Place and Peter James (m/s).
Terri Sinnott, Pat Scott, Norma Weller and Marg Stephens (s).
Val Coverdale, Ella Blyth, Garry Brian and Liz Riches (s).
Emergency: Carol Wilson.
Tomorrow sees three of our players reach grand milestones in their bowling careers with Golf Magpies.
Life member Liz Riches will play her 150th Saturday pennant game with the club. This goes with her 500 plus midweek games for the club.
Kevin Russell also plays his 150th Saturday pennant game tomorrow.
Kevin will be hoping to add to his tally in the coming weeks and hoping to finish the year with a division two premiership.
Finally, to the grand master of the Saturday club in Ray Bateman.
Batey plays his 550th Saturday pennant game for the Magpies tomorrow against Cressy.
Ray has won just about every award the club has to offer and it would be fitting for him to finish this season with a premiership medal around his neck.
Ladies President’s Handicap is continuing and B Grade Championship will commence next Thursday. Names to go on board please.
Don’t forget to book for the presentation night at the clubhouse on Friday, April 12.
Bookings can be made to president Steve. Let’s make this a great night to finish off our season.
