THOMAS McDonald triumphed in the wingless sprint Stony Point 500 and Daniel Stewart won the standard saloons Golden Helmet at Mid-Western Speedway’s season opener in Darlington on Sunday.
McDonald was one of the wingless sprint drivers doubling up after competing at Simpson the night before, where he finished seventh in the Merrett Family Trophy event.
McDonald lined up at the front of the field next to Aron Lawrence, eventually beating Lawrence by 0.16s in the 20-lap final.
Morwell’s Stewart won all three of his qualifiers in the standard saloons competition to start in the front row, and quickly took the lead at the drop of the flag.
Despite spirited challenges from Tim Hutchinson, Patrick Walsh, Steven Dadswell and Joel McInnes, Stewart held on through the ten laps to win by over four seconds and claim the Golden Helmet.
Arthur Hutchinson won the Junior 1200cc category by over six seconds after winning all his heats, defeating Bryce Leek, Riley Taylor, Ella Sheedy and Holly Hutchinson, while Jayden Humphrey won the Daylesford modified sedans ahead of Steven Warlond and Peter Jenner.
