CALLUM McSween’s run of four consecutive championships at the Terang table tennis competition came to an end when Trevor McDowell defeated him in the final.

Trevor last won the singles championship in 2001 before leaving to concentrate on playing in the much stronger Warrnambool association.

A back injury curtailed his table tennis for the last few years but this year he returned to Terang to see if he could get back to playing.

Trevor had to work hard to get to the finals rounds - Tony Young took him to five games, as did Mark Smith.

He defeated Vesha Chapagai in three games to finish on top of his section of the round-robin.

Callum had only lost one game in his three matches and cruised through to the semi-final.

In the crossover, Callum had to battle hard to defeat Tony Young in five games (where there was very little separating the two) 9-11, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9 and 11-9.

Likewise, Trevor had to work hard in his semi-final and looked likely that his opponent Michael Pearson was going to add Trevor to his growing list of opponents he’d beaten for the first time this season.

Trevor had to fight back from 2-0 to win in the fifth, 4-11, 10-12, 11-2, 11-7 and 11-4.

Callum won the first game of the final 11-7, but from then on Trevor’s game was on and he won the next three games 11-7, 11-5 and 11-8.

In B grade Ian Rochfort defended his title against Billy Baker.

B grade, due to numbers, were able to play a round-robin against each player, with the top two players contesting the final.

Ian went through the preliminaries undefeated while Billy’s only loss was against Ian.

In the final Ian won in four games 11-4, 11-8, 7-11 and 11-8.
