The morning tea provided members of the Men’s Shed the opportunity to hear from South West Healthcare staff about the services available to them in the Camperdown area, as well as ways to look after their mental health.

Camperdown Men’s Shed coordinator John Dunn said the event itself was organised over the course of a fortnight.

“One of our members is the father of one of the mental health team leaders, and he mentioned we haven’t done anything with mental health for a while,” he said.

“His son was available to give us a small talk.

“It all happened very quickly for us – over a fortnight – and we tried to get the word out the best we could.

“One of the functions of the Men’s Shed is to look after our health as well as general woodworking.

“I hope they took away a bit more understanding of mental health issues, how to approach people and general mental health.”

Despite the short notice, 15 people attended the information talk, taking home a number of resources.

“I was happy with the attendance,” Mr Dunn said.

“To get a few people outside the shed with such short notice was very good.”

Attendees were able to ask questions about signs and symptoms of mental ill health, when to step in if they notice someone is struggling and how to go about assisting someone in need.
