Mid-week bowlers dig deep

COBDEN’S midweek division one bowls team dug deep to overcome Central on their home turf last week.

The team pulled ahead on the second last ends and maintained the lead for a 77-68 victory.

The win has elevated the team to sixth on the ladder.

Margaret Hester, Bazil Hammond, Elaine Telford and Janelle Rohan won 33-28 from P. Price, A. Gray, N. Gray and C. Kenshole.

Ann Scott, Trevor Roberts, Bert Strampel and Doreen Coverdale won 24-19 against I. Johson, J. Gray, V. Barrow and L. Price.

Denis Delaney, Sue Couch, Peter Richardson and Brian Howard went down by one shot to R. Chapman, G. Newha, A. Johnson and R. Tillack 20-21.

Division two suffered a loss to Birregurra at home, dropping back to sixth spot from third.

Paul Dwyer, Jill Lynch, Evelyn Grayland and David Childs lost 18-28 to B. Walker, J. Walker, C. Barter and I. Bullock.

Kath Spokes, Joy Beaton, Denise Robertson and Patsy Neal lost 17-32 to L. Battye, G. Battye, K. Gannon and D. Barter.

Claire Reynolds, Colin Spokes, David Luker and Des Couch also lost 18-25 to C. Fitzpatrick, H. Neale, F. Gardinerand J. Bullock, giving Birregurra a clean sweep to win 85-53.

In division two weekend pennant Cobden drew with Camperdown Golf at home, dropping them to third on the ladder by two points.

However, Cobden has a better percentage than second placed Winchelsea.

Colin Hammond, Brendan Hammond, Murray Williamson and Tom Robertson lost 20-29 to C. McLeod, T. Place, D. O’Donohue and G. Edwards.

Noah Mungean, Greg Rooke, Ben Robertson and Bazil Hammond won 25-16 over D. Stewart, R. Dunstan, B. Boyd and K. Johnston.

L. Fitzgerald, M. Brebner, N. Brebner and G. Bateman were too strong for Nick Kemp, Ashley Sinnott, Peter Richardson and Mitch Reed winning 27-20.

Terry Beasley, Darren Mulgrew, Brendan Hutt and Kathryn Robertson won 27-20 against J. O’Donohue, P. James, P. Place and N. Tolland.

At Camperdown Golf, Cobden’s division three team showed no mercy giving Golf a bowling lesson, winning 109-50.

With an exceptional result, Trevor Roberts, Kath Spokes, Colin Whiteside and Jim O’Shea won 41-9 over G. Brian, E. Riches, A. Whiteside and P. Taylor.

Leon Carrigan, Janelle Rohan, Keith Simmonds and Brian Howard won 24-18 against S. Lucas, E. Waterfall, S. Whiteside and P. Scott.

Bert Strampel, Ken Lynch, Colin Spokes, and David Luker also had a good win 26-9 over J. Salau, M. Stephens, V. Coverdale and N. Weller.

Richard McVilly, Geoff Ovens, Jeff Hester and Don Anderson defeated I. Wyles, J. Molan and R. Skene 18-14 who put up a good effort, being one bowler down.

Cobden is now third on the ladder, but Simpson is maintaining its dominance of division three being two wins ahead of second placed City.

Division four made the long trip to Lorne but was unable to bring home a win.

Lorne won 63-52 in a relatively close match.

Doreen Coverdale, Paul Dwyer, Ken Coverdale and Ken Farquharson lost 13-27 to E. Lugg, J. Bliss, F. O’Mara and T. Buckler.

Pat Hickey, Claire Reynolds, Loreign Andrews and Peter Giblett lost to P. Barraclough, D. Lawler, J. Purdie and D. Williams 14-17.

Joy Beaton, Garry Matheson, Des Couch and Janine Hutt had a win over K. Lugg, A. Briggs, R. Lloyd and D. Wyles 25-19.

Cobden had now dropped from fourth to fifth but is well clear of Winchelsea in sixth place on the ladder.

This Thursday at 6pm, the men’s B grade championship will be played with Brian Howard facing off against Trevor Roberts.

Both men defeated division two players to reach the final in a mammoth effort.
