Mid-week bowlers in good form
CAMPERDOWN Golf Magpies Bowling Club division one mid-week team has started the new year with some encouraging signs.
The first week back saw the Magpies face off against Colac City with a spot in the four going to the victors.
Fortunately, Golf came out on top with a 13 shot win 73-60.
Leanne Fitzgerald’s rink of Gary Body, Janet Molan and Ro Dunstan led the way with a 19 shot win, 30-11.
Rene Wyles’ rink of Michael Brebner, Barb Boyd and John O’Donohue also had a good win by 14 shots, 30-16.
Pam Place’s rink of Denis Place, Greg Teal and Elaine Waterfall tried hard all day but went down 33-13.
The win saw Golf move into fourth spot on the ladder which is the first time this season that they have been in the four.
Last Tuesday saw them play top side Colac Central and being the only team to defeat Central this season a close game was expected - and this was the case with Golf defeating Central, 70-61.
Leanne Fitzgerald’s team of Craig Skene, Janet Molan and Noelene Tolland led the way again with a six shot win, 28-22.
Rene Wyles’ team of Michael Brebner, Barb Boyd and John O’Donohue followed suit with a six shot win also, 25-19.
Pam Place’s team of Peter Reilly, Noel Brebner and Elaine Waterfall just went down by three shots, 17-20.
Next Tuesday the team will travel to Simpson and a win would see the Magpies consolidate their place in the top four.
Teams are:
Noelene Tolland, Janet Molan, Craig Skene and Leanne Fitzgerald (s).
Ilma Daws,John O’Donohue, Michael Brebner and Rene Wyles (s).
Elaine Waterfall, Greg Teal, John Molan and Pam Place (s).
Unfortunately things did not go well for division three mid-week, going down to top side Derrinallum by 63 shots.
The loss saw them hold on to fourth spot by eight points from Colac 4.
Last Tuesday saw them travel to Winchelsea to play the top side and after a tight struggle all day saw Golf go down by six shots 67-73 despite winning two of the three rinks.
Peter James’ rink of Denis Place, Kell Edwards and Trish Taylor continued their good form winning by two shots, 22-20.
Liz Riches’ rink of Garry Brial, Ella Blyth and Val Coverdale had a good win, 27-22.
Unfortunately, Marg Stephens’ rink of Norma Weller, Pat Scott and Ruth Skene found the opposition a little too strong to go down by 13 shots, 31-18.
Next Tuesday division three will travel to play bottom placed Colac 4 so a win there would see them possibly lock in a finals berth.
Teams are as follows:
Kell Edwards, Ruth Skene, Denis Place and Peter James (s).
Carol Wilson, Pat Scott, Norma Weller and Marg Stephens (s).
Val Coverdale, Ella Blyth, Garry Brian and Liz Riches (s).
Ladies Thursday social bowls continues next week with Star of the Green commencing at 1pm.
Saturday pennant resumes tomorrow with Golf Magpies division one team playing third placed Colac City.
Things have not gone to plan for Golf this season and with several players unavailable again tomorrow selectors have had to move players around again.
With the top four out of reach with five matches left, the Magpies cannot make the four but can certainly shape it by scoring some wins.
