South West Model Engineers honorary secretary Sharon Howard said the school holidays had proven a busy time, with locals and visitors alike all aboard for rides around the historic track.

“On Sunday, July 5 we had 420 rides and the first Sunday of the holidays we had a couple of hundred,” she said.

“This past Sunday was wet, cold and windy so we only were able to get 38 rides.

“It’s been quite good despite some poor weather, and it was nice to get a visit from (Liberal leader) Jess Wilson and (Polwarth MP) Richard Riordan.”

Mrs Howard said the elation on the faces of children as the horn blares and the train started moving is what it’s all about – regardless of how many rides are taken on any given day.

“It’s great, and it’s why we do it,” she said.

“We’re all volunteers and we like to see all the kids, big or little, with a smile on their face.”

Volunteers behind the successful miniature railway took thousands of passengers on hundreds of rides over the holidays.
