Mixed results for bowlers

MIXED results were achieved by Cobden bowlers in the midweek pennant competition.

Division one travelled to Colac to play under the dome for a loss, while division three snuck in over neighbouring town rivals Camperdown Magpies at home.

Cobden copped a hiding from Colac 1 with most of the damage done on one rink.

Janelle Rohan, Geoff Ovens, David Childs and Doreen Coverdale were unlucky to lose 26-27 against A. Dudley, G. Nelson, P. Neale and G. Gourley.

Ann Scott, Kath Spokes, Loreign Andrews and Bazil Hammond defeated L. Pekin, A. Jones, G. McNabb and S. Gormley 20-19.

Unfortunately, Trevor Roberts, Sue Couch, Brian Howard and Bert Strampel were completely overwhelmed by a strong combination of C. Watson, T. Watson, E. Andres and C. Donovan losing 49-10.

This drops Cobden to seventh place on the ladder and must face ladder leaders City in a fortnight after the Melbourne Cup break.

In division three Cobden won two rinks and 60-57.

Ken Lynch, Paul Dwyer, Evelyn Grayland and Ann Coverdale were defeated by C. Wilson, N. Weller, P. Scott and D. Watts 22-16.

Jill Lynch, Joy Beaton, Janine Hutt and Pam Savage won 25-18 over M. Stephens, L. Pearson, R. Skene and K. Banks.

Claire Reynolds, Colin Spokes, John Raeside and Colleen Johnson narrowly defeated P. James, G. Weller, R. Bourke and D. Noonan 19-17.

This win puts Cobden in third place.

In weekend pennant, division four was forced to forfeit against Cressy due to lack of availability of players in all divisions.

Camperdown Magpies also forfeited to Colac 4 for the same reason.

This has put Cobden at sixth spot on the ladder ahead of Camperdown Magpies who have had no wins so far this season.

Both division two and three played at home on Saturday in glorious conditions.

Division two, although undermanned, gave the equally undermanned Camperdown Magpies 3 a bowls lesson, winning 117-68.

Darren Mulgrew, Brendan Hammond Peter Richardson and Janine Hutt defeated D. Page, M. Winsall, J. Salau and N. Saligari 28-21.

Noah Mungean, Ash Sinnott, Mitch Reed and Lachie Taylor defeated S. Adeney, A. White, W. Henry and R. Bourke 25-18.

Nick Kemp, Terry Beasley, Ann Scott and Tom Robertson had a strong 30-15 win over K. Russell, T. Spokes, P. Atchison and N. Tolland.

The win of the day went to Micheal Hickey, Murray Williamson, Trevor Roberts and Bazil Hammond who won 34-14 over division three recruits T. Hose, P. Halloran, B. Dickson and D. Watts.

Cobden is in third position on the ladder, one of four sides with two wins and one loss.

Division three was shown up by Simpson 93-69, despite winning two rinks.

Garry Matheson, Joy Beaton, Kath Spokes and Don Anderson struggled to eventually win 20-18 against A. Swayn, C. Harris, J. Benson and M. Gass.

Janelle Rohan, Paul Dwyer, Jim O’Shea and B. Strampel defeated M. Seabrook, C. Dixon, B. Newcombe and K. Woodmason 23-18.

David Staggard, Ken Lynch, Ken Farquharson and Brian Howard narrowed the lead but went down 29-16 against R. Yendall, T. Harris, G. Langenhauizen, K. Convey. B.Newcombe and B. Newcombe.

A. Beasy and C. Worden dominated all game to win 31-10 over Richard McVilly, Colin Spokes, Rex Perkins and Loreign Andrews.

Cobden and Simpson have swapped spots on the ladder, which keeps Cobden in the four.

They will make the long trip to Lorne next week.

Both teams have one win and two losses, so this should be a good showdown.
