More than just a bargain
TERANG’S Sue Kull was among the stallholders at the Maker’s Market over the weekend, knitting away in a bid to raise money for a great cause.

Mrs Kull was hosting a fundraiser through her stall at the indoor market on Saturday while also selling dolls which gives older residents comfort in their time of greatest need.
She joined the wide range of creatives who take part in the markets which is exclusively for those selling wares they have created themselves, celebrating the talents of south west residents.
Among the items Mrs Kull had crafted was her comfort babies, dolls wearing adorable knitted clothing, which are donated to aged care providers as the dolls are proven to be a source of comfort for many people suffering from forms of dementia.
“I had so many comfort babies waiting for new homes that I decided to bring some along to the markets because any I sell can raise funds to make more,” she said.
“I also was able to sell chocolates to raise funds for the reopening of the Rodney Grove Aquatic Centre in Cobden because we’re hoping we can get it up and going again.
“All the money from my beanies goes directly to the Cancer Council, and I had lot of knitting items for sale too.”
Mrs Kull said she loved having the opportunity to help those going through a difficult situation, having seen first hand the benefit the comfort babies can have on aged care residents who are living with dementia.
“Some are not fond of seeing the oldies holding a doll because they feel it can be demeaning for them but, for people with dementia, a lot of them get great comfort out of holding baby dolls,” she said.
“I repurpose pre-loved dolls which have been given a Dettol wash, I knit clothes to put on them, wrap them up in a bunny rug and give them to people in nursing homes.
“I remember one time giving one of the dolls to a woman in aged care, who sat there cuddling it, and her eyes welled with tears when I said she could keep it.
“I get feedback from staff at nursing homes saying what a benefit it has, and anything which can give them comfort is worth it.”
A variety of stallholders lined the Civic Hall on the day, with attendance slightly down due to the bitter conditions.
The next Maker’s Market will be held in Terang at the Civic Hall on Saturday, August 15.
