MORTLAKE College students joined schools, community groups, workplaces and families across the nation in celebrating Harmony Week last week.

Running from Monday through to Sunday, national celebrations were held for Harmony Week to celebrate Australian multiculturalism and diversity.

The celebrations encourage inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.

The theme of this year’s Harmony Week was Everyone Belongs.

Mortlake College principal Sean Fitzpatrick said students enjoyed celebrating with a range of inclusive activities last Thursday, including joining together to spell out the word “Harmony” on the school oval.

“It was great in the sense that this year we have general capabilities, which is a subject that runs from year 7 to 10, so those students put together some activities for the primary students in P-6 which had a focus around harmonious practice and fun,” he said.

“We had a focus on being kind, being warm and reflecting on what harmony actually means.

“It was one of those days which are important for students and staff to stop and reflect.”

Activities included games which provided a bit of fun for students but also involved team-work concepts including colouring in and tunnel ball.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the themes of respect and togetherness which Harmony Week was established on are important to cultivating a healthy school environment.

“It was a good bit of fun,” he said.

“It’s important we don’t just talk about it (harmony), but that we practice it,” he said.
