MORTLAKE College students donned their finest flannelette to celebrate the school’s inaugural Flourish Festival last Friday.
Mortlake College principal Sean Fitzpatrick said the concept behind the festival was to celebrate the sense of community at the school and reconnect after years of COVID-19 disruption.
“Occasions such as this are key in building a positive school culture,”he said.
“The rights of passage or events students and the community can look forward to is tried and tested.
“What better time to do it than now, as we come back.
“We’re trying to get our school community more healthy and our wellbeing up and about.”
Mr Fitzpatrick said the day had proved a success with positive feedback from students, parents and school staff alike.
“Some of the comments were that is was the best school day ever,” he said.
“The staff equally felt the Flourish Festival was just well-worth it to put the pens down and focus on our collective good health and wellbeing.”
The festival featured a wide range of activities including guest speakers, footy and basketball clinics, cooking sessions with the Country Women’s Association, yoga sessions, a bush dancing soiree and barbecue lunch.
“There is only so much you can sit down and listen to someone,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.
“We wanted the day to be a mix of activity together with some of our keynote speakers to get a balance between promoting health and wellbeing with fun and connection.”
Mr Fitzpatrick said the success of the inaugural Flourish Festival left no doubt the event would be back again next year.
“It was one of those things we felt would be successful, and it was,”he said.
“At the heart of it was our school values; respect, kindness and growth mindset – and those things were definitely displayed across the day.
“So the Flourish Festival is hereto stay.”
