Mortlake embraces concept to create fun during lockdown
SCARECROWS are not typically used as a means to create smiles, but Mortlake went against the grain this weekend to have a bit of fun during COVID-19 lockdowns.

SCARECROWS are not typically used as a means to create smiles, but Mortlake went against the grain this weekend to have a bit of fun during COVID-19 lockdowns.
The creativity of locals was on full display as scarecrows donned masks, prepared for soon-to-be fishing trips, enjoyed Netflix with chocolates and soft drink, and even waved a white flag of surrender.
About a dozen homes participated in the concept, which emerged on social media last week after Mortlake local Leanne Rooke suggested the idea.
“The scarecrows were all very entertaining,” she said.
“I got lots of exercise riding my bike about having a look and taking some photos for out of town people who wanted to see them.
“Some were very inventive and I think some also reflected what lockdown had been like, or what we were missing.”
Ms Rooke said she had put up a scarecrow herself and enjoyed watching people stop to check it out.
“One resident said they were just happy to have something different to do and I know she has an energetic young boy at home,” she said.
“I was very happy to see people get involved and it certainly lifted my spirits and mademe smile.
“I hope it did for others too.”
She said the positive reactions from locals on social media had highlighted the enjoyment others had received from the concept.
“A couple of friends joined in and when talking to them they agreed that even if it only made one person happy in these rather monotonous times it was worth it,” Ms Rooke said.
“Mortlake is a great little community and when they get behind something they go all out.”
Ms Rooke said her favourite scarecrow was the fisherman.
“That was my father’s and I know he really misses being able to fish and play golf,” she said.
“It was a very optimistic scarecrow with its landing net all ready to go.”
