Motorcycle booked at 176km/h

POLICE are appealing for dashcam footage and eyewitnesses after arresting a speeding motorcycle driver last weekend.

The motorcycle, a Kawasaki Ninja, was recorded travelling at 176 kilometres an hour near Stonyford on Saturday.

Camperdown Police Senior Constable Adam Johnston said the radar detection of the motorcyclist’s speed was part of Operation Focus.

“We detected a very high speed on the radar, and a motorbike went past us travelling at a very, very high speed. That was quite alarming to us,” he said.

“When we made enquiries at the offender’s address, we located the motorbike and its rider standing very close to it and we arrested him.

“He’s been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, riding an unregistered motorbike and riding while unlicensed, as well as committing an indictable offence while on bail and breaching a condition of his bail.”

Operation Focus, which caught the speeding driver, aimed for road user behavior over the weekend to improve road safety.

Senior Constable Johnston said the roads were wet from rain, and the driver was speeding in the rain.

“It’s lucky that we were able to locate this offender before he seriously hurt or killed someone,” he said.

“We encourage motorists to drive safely and to modify your driving to suit the conditions.

Eyewitnesses, or those with dashcam footage, are encouraged to contact the Camperdown Police on 5593 1000.
