Mount walk provides unique opportunity

MORE than 100 Mortlake and district community members have taken advantage of a unique opportunity – the chance to see the view from the summit of Mount Shadwell.
The Mortlake Lions Club hosted a walk to the mount’s summit on Sunday, April 14, as well as a drive to the top of the mount on Easter Sunday.
Club member Alex Hinkley said the events received “really tremendous” support from the community.
“Everybody was really appreciative,” he said.
“All the feedback was very positive.”
About 98 people of all ages took the chance to climb the mountain, ranging up to 86 years of age.
Participants were able to complete the walk as leisurely as they wished, with a barbecue also available at the mount’s base.
Less-skilled walkers unable to reach the summit aimed for a lower vantage point.
About 20 people took the opportunity to see the view from the summit via a short drive last sunday.
Mr Hinkley said the event raised about $1200 for the club’s ongoing activities and community support.
“We’re very grateful to the (Mount Shadwell) property owners,” he said.
Mr Hinkley said the club would likely host another walk to the mount summit next year due to the event’s success.
