Moyne calls for local knowledge on roads
MOYNE Shire councillors have endorsed a motion to seek community feedback on its 2025 Road Management Plan (RMP).
The purpose of the RMP is to ensure council meets the statutory requirements of the State Government’s Road Management Act (Regulations) 2016, and to make clear which roads are managed by Moyne Shire.
Moyne Shire Council mayor councillor Karen Foster said council has also published its Register of Public Roads in conjunction with the RMP, as they must be read together.
“The register records road names and locality, dates on which they were declared, and the classification of the roads and how they will be managed in association with other road authorities,” she said.
“These are important documents that have an impact on daily life for all our road users.
“We do encourage community, visitor and industry feedback to the plan.
“The plan establishes a systematic way in which we manage our roads, in addition to community feedback.”
Cr Foster said feedback would be used to help council shape its plans for road maintenance based on where its responsibilities began and ended.
“A key purpose of the RMP is to establish performance standards around road inspections and repairs, and to clarify which bodies are responsible for each of the roads in our shire,” she said.
“It helps us consider affordability, available resources and risk management when planning how we look after our roads.
“As required under the regulations we have set achievable standards to meet road users’ needs and our community’s reasonable expectations of day-to-day maintenance.”
Councillor Jim Doukas moved the motion, with councillor Susan Taylor as seconder.
Cr Doukas said he wanted to see the opportunity for the community to provide feedback advertised far and wide to emphasise the importance of the document.
“Roads are a big issue in Moyne Shire so this is a chance for the community to have their input in to how we conduct road maintenance, rehabilitation and anything else to do with roads,” he said.
“It’s going out for a 28-day advertising period so, please, anything will be helpful – don’t worry about being a bit critical.
“Constructive criticism never hurt anybody – please, give us your ideas, even new ideas so we can formulate a way going forward so we can maybe do a better job, and a cheaper job, to keep the community happy and have less potholes in the road.
“If you’re concerned about the state of the roads you travel on, have something to say about it – let us know so we can go forward and do our job to the best of our ability.”
Councillor Jordan Lockett said public knowledge would be vital in shaping a strong plan.
“In our vast shire, our constituents travel on these roads every day so they are the experts,” he said.
“We strongly welcome your feedback.”
The motion was endorsed with a unanimous 6-0 vote.
Moyne Shire Council will make the plan available for viewing and public comment, with notification to the community via newspapers, local newsletters and social media.
