MEMBER for South West Coast Roma Britnell has slammed the Victorian Government as rural road repairs fall 25 per cent below target.

Ms Britnell said regional lives continue to be placed at risk with the state government falling 25 percent short of its own road repair target, as revealed by the Department of Transport and Planning’s latest annual report.

The report stated the government only treated nine million square meters of rural and regional roads, 25.6 percent down on its 2022-23 target of 12.14 million square meters.

Ms Britnell said the result showed the city-centric approach the government takes as, while the rural target was not met, the targets for suburban roads had been met.

“The Labor Government have been cutting the road maintenance budget year by year," as a result, our roads are in an appalling state,” she said.

“This city-centric Labor Government are falling short of their own road repair target. The level of disregard beggars belief”.

“Without a sufficient resurfacing and resealing program, the deterioration of our roads will only accelerate.

“I raised in Parliament (earlier this month) the perilous state of roads in South West Coast, highlighting the dangers regional commuters face every single day.”
