MP welcomes scrapping of firearm cap
MEMBER for Lowan Emma Kealy has welcomed the scrapping of the proposal to cap the number of firearms per license holder, saying common sense had prevailed.
Ms Kealy said the outcome was a testament to the advocacy of law-abiding firearm owners, sporting clubs and industry organisations across Victoria.
“This outcome is a credit to the many licensed firearm owners who stood up and made their voices heard,” she said.
“Firearm owners attended forums hosted by The Nationals, signed petitions, contacted their local MPs and advocated strongly through organisations such as the Sporting Shooters’ Association of Australia, Field and Game Australia and the Australian Deer Association.
“The Nationals were proud to take petitions from law-abiding firearm owners to both the Victorian and Federal Parliaments because responsible firearm owners deserve to have their voices heard.
“Licensed firearm owners should never be punished for the actions of criminals and extremists.”

Ms Kealy said proposals to cap firearm ownership would have unfairly targeted recreational shooters, hunters, farmers and sporting clubs while doing nothing to improve community safety.
“Reducing the number of legally owned firearms would not have prevented horrific incidents like Bondi and would not stop criminals obtaining illegal weapons,” she said.
Ms Kealy said The Nationals would continue standing with regional Victorians and the sporting shooting community.
“The Nationals will always stand up for law-abiding firearm owners,” Ms Kealy said.
“The Nationals will closely examine the legislation when it is released to ensure the rights of licensed firearm owners are protected.”
