MRC students to shave for breast cancer
A GROUP of Mercy Regional College (MRC) students and one teacher are growing out their hair for a charity shave planned for early August.
MRC will be holding a Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Thursday, August 6, and are calling on community members to make donations to their cause.
MRC student Miles Sinnott said all money raised will be going towards Breast Cancer Australia, a cause close to the school community.
“We’ve had two staff at the school who have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” he said.
“Our year level went to school with one of the teacher’s sons – we started high school with him.
“We thought it’d be a good thing to raise a bit of money for it, with it affecting people in our community at school.
“We’re doing a head shave day on August 6, and throughout the day we’ll have a few raffles and games to help raise a bit more money.”
To date, students have raised $16,248 for the cause but are calling for additional donations throughout July.
Miles said MRC is looking for as many donations as possible, having already passed its initial goal.
“Our original goal was to try to get $5000, but we’re trying to increase it to raise as much money and awareness as we can to try to help out people who are struggling with that sort of stuff right now,” he said.
“You don’t necessarily have to donate money-wise; we’ve been down and saw a few shops, and they’re going to donate prizes that we can use and gift vouchers for raffles.”
Miles said a number of students had agreed to have their heads shaved for the cause.
Students who have put their hand up to face the clippers include:
Ben McGlade; Rhys Unwin; Eli Dwyer; Gus Walsh; Darcy Vick; Ben Henderson; Luke Kavanagh; Jonty Lafferty; Wilba Cheeseman; Tarklyn Love, and; Shaun Clover.
Teacher Daniel Glennen also put his hand up to face the clippers, with female student Lilly Cusack donating 30cm of her hair to create wigs for those who lose their hair to cancer treatment.
Miles said the awareness day will be full of various activities, games and raffles to raise funds, with crazy hair and wigs and pink casual clothes a must for the day.
“The start of the day, we’re going to have a bit of a talk about why we’re doing it and what’s going to happen,” he said.
“Then we’re going to have a head shave, and people can buy $2 wax strips and wax some of the kids’ legs for a bit of fun and a laugh.
“There’s going to be a sausage sizzle – all of the money from that will go to breast cancer.
“We’re going to have games like a coin slide for prizes. We’ve also got two AFL signed jumpers that we’re going to auction off.”
