Must win game this weekend
LAST weekend was another blow for Woorndoo/Mortlake’s senior football finals aspirations, with the Tigers suffering a sixth consecutive loss.
Playing at the Woorndoo Recreation Reserve, the home team led at every change, only to be overrun by SMW Rovers in the last quarter.
The visitors, down by 15 points at the last change, scored four goals to one in the final term to register an 11.5.71 to 8.16.64 win.
Kane Killen, Damien McCorkell, Tyson Osborne, Jack Richie, Matthew Pemberton and Tom Gough were best for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
On debut for the club, experienced and travelled goalkicker Matthew Carnelley kicked three goals, with McCorkell kicking two.
With finals still a chance, the Tigers play Caramut at Caramut this week in a must win game.
In the reserves, SMW Rovers scored a 39-point win, 8.13.61 to 2.10.22.
Chris Crawley, Rhys Casson and Mark Jones were best for the Tigers, with Harry Wills and James Dalton kicking a goal each.
Woorndoo/Mortlake had the bye in the under 16.5s.
After close losses the past two weeks, Woorndoo/Mortlake’s A grade netballers finally got the points in a close game.
The Tigers led narrowly at every change in their 30-29 win.
“Not sure my heart can keep handling these close finishes,” laughed Woorndoo/Mortlake coach Bec Rohan.
“It was a really good, hard fought game, they really came out firing.”
Rohan said while injury and illness were still plaguing her team, the Tigers supporters made a real difference.
“Even though it was wet and cold, the atmosphere was incredible and loud,” Rohan said.
“The support we got really did help push us over the line.”
The fight in her team was pleasing for Rohan.
“They were tough conditions to play in, the court was wet and slippery, several of us were sluggish having or recovering from the flu.
“I’m really proud of how we pushed through all of that to get the win.”
Rohan herself as goal keeper and centre Elise Killen were best for the Tigers.
“Elise was one of us who was definitely not 100 per cent well, yet she fought hard for the ball for the entire game.
“She drove our forward movements and played a great game.”
Goal attack Nicole Anderson scored 15 goals, with goal shooter Brooke Richardson scoring 14.
Rohan is keen for her team to finish the year strongly, starting with this week’s game at Caramut.
“Our spirits are still high, training has been really good, we want to finish the year strongly.”
The B grade game saw a 26-13 win to Woorndoo/Mortlake.
Lily Schuuring led the scoring for Woorndoo/Mortlake with nine goals.
Woorndoo/Mortlake had a 28-17 win in the C grade netball.
Annalise Abbott scored 18 goals for the Tigers, with Jenna Clark shooting 10.
The 18 and under match saw a 33-24 win to Woorndoo/Mortlake.
Ava Wardlaw scored 28 goals and was named best on court, with Bella Wardlaw also in the best.
The Tigers had a 36-20 win in the 15 and under netball.
Indi Wardlaw scored 26 goals and Natalie Krepp 10 for the Tigers.
The 13 and under game ended up a 9-9 draw, with Paige Maddock scoring seven goals for Woorndoo/Mortlake.
