Nail-biting grand final

A THREE-season unbeaten winning streak for the Heytesbury-Princetown Storm division three team has ended with an agonising one run loss on Saturday.

Pomborneit Gold won the toss and elected to bat first in the South West Cricket Association division three grand final at the Camperdown number two oval.

The Storm was well on top at drinks, with Gold at 5/72, before the Pomborneit lower order rallied to finish with 9/177 from their 40 overs.

New ball bowler Daniel Balcombe took 3/21 from his eight overs, with Norm Vogels taking two wickets and a wicket each to Andrew Malone, Nathan Balcombe, Leigh Doak and Cody Noonan.

The Storm’s top order batted solidly but the run rate was kept in check by the Pomborneit bowling.

Opener Terry Webb scored 36 from 63 balls, with Justin Hosking scoring 39 from 42 and Bailey Delaney 23 from 27 in a fifth wicket partnership of 52 that saw the Storm in sight of victory.

Both Hosking and Delaney were dismissed with the score on 153, Heytesbury-Princetown still needing 24 from 15 balls when Delaney was the sixth wicket to fall.

Two run outs in two balls in the 39th over saw the Storm needing 13 to win with one wicket in hand.

Starting the final over on 9/168 and only needing eight runs for a tie that would have given them the premiership, Nathan Balcombe hit the third ball of the over for four to edge the Storm closer.

A dot ball on the fourth ball, then a two off the penultimate ball, saw the Storm needing two to tie and three to win off the final ball.

Nathan Balcombe hit the ball to cover with the batters running one, Pomborneit fielder Tim Whitehead running the ball into the stumps at the non-striker’s end to finish the game - Pomborneit Gold claiming a dramatic win by a solitary run.
